Coastal Grey
A brand new shade of grey joins us here at Hidden Pond Yarns! A very pretty, light/medium hue of grey with a very subtle hint of mauve to it. I find you can see the colour best right in between November Fog and Pebble for comparison!
Coastal Grey is shown on here on my Squishy Sock base.
Let me take a moment to walk you through all 10 of my different yarn bases.
Mohair Halo Base: A delicate, lace weight yarn made up of 72% Superkid Mohair and 28% Mulberry Silk. Each skein is 50 grams and 460 yards, single ply construction. This yarn is lovely on it’s own, but is also amazing when held together with another yarn base. The fuzziness of the mohair creates a halo of colour within your project. Fibres in this base are sourced from South Africa. Hand wash only, lay flat to dry.
Lustrous Lace Base: This very thin, very fine lace weight yarn is both luxurious yet practical. Made up of 75% Extrafine Superwash Merino, and 25% Mulberry Silk, this base is so very soft, and the colours of dye simply glow throughout each skein. 100 grams and 875 yards, this yarn base is a 2ply construction. A stunning choice for shawls and light summer garments, this yarn base has a lovely drape and is very comfortable to wear next to the skin. Fibres in this base are sourced from Australia, the wool used in this yarn is ethically produced from sheep that have NOT been mulesed.. Hand wash only, lay flat to dry.
Squishy Sock Base: A soft and plump fingering weight yarn, made up of 80% Superwash Merino Wool and 20% Nylon. Each skien is 114 grams and 437 yards. It has an 8 ply makeup, giving it a substantial feel for a fingering weight yarn, which borderlines sport weight for some. It is machine washable on delicate cycle, thanks to it’s superwash treatment. This is a reliable and practical choice for items like socks, shawls, baby items and other wearable garments. Fibres in this base are sourced from Australia. It is machine washable on delicate cycle, thanks to it’s superwash treatment, and is best laid flat to dry.
Luxe Sock Base: Luxe Sock is made up of 75% Ultra Fine Merino Wool, 15% Mulberry Silk, and 10% Cashmere. Each skien is 100 grams and 437 yards, 2ply construction. This yarn base is heavenly soft against the skin, and perfect for a special project calling for a high end fingering weight yarn. The Mulberry Silk adds drape and lustre, and the cashmere creates a fuzzy halo effect as you work with it. The colours of dye tend to shine through, looking much more striking and rich compared to some of my samples on Superwash bases. Fibres in this base are sourced from Australia, the wool used in this yarn is ethically produced from sheep that have NOT been mulesed. Hand wash only, lay flat to dry.
Dreamy Sock Base: If you’re familiar with my Dreamy DK base, this is the fingering weight version of the same thing. Made up of 70% Baby Alpaca, 20% Silk, and 10% Cashmere, with 437 yards/100grams per skein, this yarn is a 4ply make up, It’s an untreated yarn base, so the colours of dye always look a lot softer and more toned down, while any speckles turn out a bit more muddled. Colourways always look different on this base, I try to add photos to the listing whenever possible. It is unbelievably soft, and nothing short of a delight to knit with, it has been my favourite base for some time now! Being an untreated yarn base, it’s important to alway hand wash your garments in cold water, and lay them flat to dry. Colour bleeding is more common with this base, and should be expected, especially in the first few washes. Fibres in this base are sourced from South America.
Hidden DK Base: Once a little shop secret, this base is now available all the time! This ultra versatile Double Knit Base is a no-brainer, easy choice for anything meant to wear next to the skin. Made up of 85% Extra Fine Superwash Merino Wool and 15% Nylon, this yarn is unbelievably soft, easy to care for (machine washable on a delicate cycle, in cold water) and takes up the dye colours beautifully. This yarn base (especially) does not agree with the plastic packaging and shipping process, and can often have an off-putting odour upon opening. With a little room to breathe, and some fresh air, you’ll notice it dissipates quickly enough! Each skein is 100 grams and 246 yards, this yarn is a 4ply construction. Fibres in this base are sourced from Australia, the wool used in this yarn is ethically produced from sheep that have NOT been mulesed.
Dreamy DK Base: A superb Double Knit weight yarn that is made up of 70% Baby Alpaca, 20% Silk and 10% Cashmere. Each skein is 100 grams and 246 yards, with a 4 ply construction. This yarn knits up beautifully and is oh so soft against the skin. Due to the nature of this yarn, the colours of the dye tend to be more muted and muddled, softer and subtler than on my superwash bases. Colourways always look different on this base, I try to add photos to the listing whenever possible. This is a luxury yarn base that is a pure pleasure to work with. The silk creates a lustrous hue and the cashmere gives a subtle fuzzy halo effect as you knit with it. Hand wash only, colour bleeding to be expected, especially with the first few washes. Fibres in this base are sourced from South America.
Classic Worsted Base: A soft and full Worsted Base yarn, made up of 100% Superwash Merino Wool. Each skein is 110 grams and 205 yards, with a 4 ply construction. It is plush, and versatile, with terrific stitch definition. And thanks to it’s superwash treatment, it is also machine washable on a delicate cycle. A great, practical choice for any project calling for a Worsted Weight base. Fibres in this base are sourced from Australia.
Alpaca Aran Base: This yarn base has become a true favourite of mine for any project calling for Worsted or Aran Weight yarn. Superbly soft and fuzzy, I find this base to be less dense and firm than my Classic Worsted Base. Because this base is made up of 100% Untreated Baby Alpaca fibre, my Forever Colourways do end up looking quite different on this base, which can be tricky and yet, delightfully surprising. Speckles will look more smudge-y and muted, and the dye colours themselves turn out softer and more muddled overall. This yarn is a 3ply, and clocks in at 181 yards and 100 grams per skien. Hand wash only, lay flat to dry. Colour bleeding can be extra prevalent with untreated yarn bases, like Alpaca Aran. Fibres in this base are sourced from South America.
Hidden Bulky Base: Once a little shop secret, this base is now available all the time! The thickest of all my bases, this 100% Extra Fine Superwash Merino base is unbelievably soft next to the skin, and the dye colours simply shine through. Each skein is 100 grams and 109 yards, with a 2ply construction. Although made up of the same blend as the Classic Worsted Weight base, this yarn has a much softer feel to it thanks to the Extra Fine Merino Wool. Fibres in this base are sourced from Australia, the wool used in this yarn is ethically produced from sheep that have NOT been mulesed.
I keep all base options In Stock online, but there’s always a chance I’ll need to dye the right colour on the right base for your order. It never takes longer than a day or two and I’ll happily ship your order as quickly as possible within 1-2 business days
The beauty of indie dyed yarns is that no two are identical, I recommend alternating skeins after each row for a more uniform look. It is a rare occurrence, and I do everything possible to avoid this, but there is always a chance of colour bleeding with the first wash. The photos used are chosen to best represent the true colourways, using natural sunlight. I try my hardest to achieve consistency between dye lots, however it’s important to order the right quantity for your project, as there is always a difference from one batch to the next. If you need a quick consultation while choosing colours, please let me know, I’d love to help!
